Limit damage when it is safe
If water is actively flowing and you know the correct local or main shutoff, turn it off. Move belongings away from the area and avoid standing water near electrical outlets or appliances. Do not open walls, ceilings, or electrical panels to look for a leak.
Useful observations for the first call
Note where the water appears, whether it is continuous, whether a fixture or appliance was recently used, and whether there is staining, a higher water bill, or a sound of water when nothing is running. A photo of the visible area can be helpful, but it is not a substitute for onsite diagnosis.
Understand the recommended scope
Ask a provider how the source will be confirmed, what repair work is included, and whether additional access or restoration work may be needed after the plumbing issue is addressed. This is especially useful for intermittent leaks or moisture found away from a visible fixture.
This resource does not provide emergency service or plumbing work. For immediate hazards, contact the appropriate local emergency service or a qualified provider directly.
